I had found a cup holder design on Thingiverse that cantilevered a "normal-sized" cup holder into the foot wells of the first generation Mini Coopers. The design, however, was a bit bulky and only accounted for one, generic size.
I decided to take the idea and redesign to allow for the most common drinks I find myself trying to travel with in my R53 Mini. The main cup holders (is large enough for most Large (32-44oz) drinks you find at fast food restaurants and gas stations and also includes a cut out for travel mugs that have a handle. Then three consecutively smaller inserts can be added to adjust the opening for:
- most Medium (12-22oz) soft drinks and most paper coffee cups with tapered sides,
- standard North America canned beverages, and
- standard "tall/thin" canned beverages (Red Bulls and a lot of other energy drinks and sparkling waters
The Main cup holder needs to be printed twice with the file mirrored for the second part. The insert files can just be printed twice as there is no specific orientation required.
The main cup holders also has a slot cut into the space where the original cup holders would be in the Mini. This slot is designed to fit most sized smart phones in landscape (even with a case, so long as not too thick) and places the phone right in front of the 12v outlet/cigarette lighter in the center console for easy charging with a short charging cable.
